Build The Skills That Matter

A strong foundation goes beyond subject knowledge. That's why all Foundation Year students study two shared modules designed to prepare you for success at university and beyond.

Research Foundations for Behavioural Science introduces the principles behind scientific enquiry, helping you develop skills in research design, ethics, data analysis, and both quantitative and qualitative methods. These are the tools that underpin modern Psychology and Sport Science, giving you the confidence to engage with evidence, ask better questions, and understand how knowledge is created.

Alongside this, Academic Literacy and Professional Skills helps you develop the transferable skills needed to thrive at university. You'll strengthen your academic writing, critical thinking, study techniques, reflection, and communication skills, building confidence as an independent learner.

How You’ll Learn

You will learn through a combination of lectures, seminars, workshops, practical sessions, and independent study. Teaching is designed to help you build confidence in your subject while developing the academic and professional skills needed for degree-level study.

Alongside face-to-face teaching, you'll use Blackboard to access learning materials, complete self-directed activities, and develop essential skills such as communication, organisation, time management, and reflection.

How You'll Be Assessed

Assessment is designed to prepare you for undergraduate study and will take a variety of forms. These may include written assignments, data analysis tasks, reflective writing, posters, and presentations. This varied approach allows you to develop a broad range of academic, research, and communication skills while demonstrating your progress throughout the year.
